Screen printing on the wall

John Rainis and I collaborated on a series of screen printed collages on wood slats back in 2019. One of the pieces was purchased for the leasing office of BLDG89 in Allston through our good friends at Isenberg Projects. Their asked if we could do some accents around the piece by screen printing on the wall behind it.

I’ve only done one other project where vertical screen printing was required. I was invited to a show many years ago, where a few artists created a screen printed mural on the wall. The process was new to everyone involved and a couple people immediately backed out after trying their first print. Adam Yothers and myself pushed on and created a pretty amazing collage mural, which can be seen below.

For this new install, I would be collaborating with John Rainis. John and I have worked on a number of tricky projects together and I knew we could handle screen printing on the wall. For this project, we created a number of different looks for the decision-makers to think through. We landed on something that I was really psyched to execute. It took most of the day but I’m so happy with the way this project came out!

Peaky Blinders fan art

Peaky Blinders is a show I highly recommend. I’m drawn to the dark lighting and the gritty look and feel of all the characters. Arthur Shelby has incredible facial lines, and I put together this little piece of Peaky Blinders fanart earlier this year.

Painting portraits in Procreate

I started painting portraits in Procreate last month and it’s been very interesting. I used the last stimulus check from the 2020-2021 Covid-19 pandemic to pickup an iPad Pro. People have been telling me to do this for a few years now but I always shrugged it off as unnecessary. Now that I’ve spent some time with it, I can say that this is the best purchase I’ve made in a few years!

My favorite thing about creating through the iPad is having the ability to create in casual spaces. When I draw in my sketchbook I need to setup everything just right so that my book is angled properly, I can see my reference image properly lit, and all my materials are laid out in front of me. With the iPad I can be on the couch or outside on the front steps, it really doesn’t matter.

Here are three portraits that I really like from the first few weeks of creating portraits on procreate: Ian McKellen, Tommy Flanagan & a reference I took from unsplash:

Danny Trejo digital portrait

I got a hold of an iPad with Procreate last month and have been enjoying creating with it. I’ve only created a few pieces so far but I just created this Danny Trejo digital portrait and had a little breakthrough during the process.

Back in 2013, I created an 18×18″ screen print on wood panel that featured a portrait of Danny Trejo. The original artwork was lost in a fire we had in my studio building. When I was playing with some of the preferences and layer adjustments I realized there was a halftone feature built-in. I decided to recreate the original piece and I did a strange dance of splitting my reference between the original source image and the old wood panel print.

Sketchbook tour

I put together this Sketchbook tour video on my youtube channel. This book is from 2017 – 2018 but has some decent drawings in there. It was actually fun to flip through the pages and talk through my thought process.

I plan on putting some more of these together as I get breaks from studio work. Check back soon.

Painting David Patrick Kelly from Warriors

I came to the Warriors movie after the fact, because I was too young to catch it first go around. But the Crow was my movie when I was a teenager. “Fire it up” got my teenage angst going.

Fast forward many years later and I found this screenshot of David Patrick Kelly from the Warriors in one of my “2draw” folders on my computer. I spent about 2 1/2 hours on this. The video is chopped up a little bit and sped up a whole lot.

Drawing baby Cyan

I created a new youtube channel for my portrait drawings. With the shop closed due to coronavirus, there isn’t much print-making I can do at the moment. Hoping to get busy recording some drawing process videos and post them up there for your stay-at-home enjoyment.

First video up there is this process video for a drawing I’m working on with me and Cyan. Hope you enjoy.

Wrapping paper design

Here is some wrapping paper design I made for my friends at Trifecta Editions. These were launched during the holidays in 2015. They were printed with special inks Trifecta whipped up and they came out great.

Wood panels for Ghostface Killah’s 12 Reasons to Die

used to prep the panels for hanging
wood panels prepped and ready for print
private press wood panel 12 reasons to die

I had the unique experience of mixing my commercial work and my personal work for Ghostface Killah’s 12 Reasons to Die this past April. My company, AntiDesigns, was creating prints for the 12 Delucas Edition (Deluxe Edition) of the album when I decided to create a couple prints on wood panels I had laying around the studio during the proofing process. What started as a simple gesture of gratitude became a super-limited “Private Press” edition of the album that included a ready to hang wood panel with the Deluxe Edition artwork. Below is a process video I whipped up for the wood panels and below that is the official process video for the 12 Delucas version that includes a track from the album.
