New wood panel prints

This summer has been hectic! I have had a hard time finding the space to create much, but last week I managed to pull these two 12×12 wood panel prints together. They will be available for purchase at the AntiDesigns booth at Boston Ahts Festival 2012, this weekend September 8+9 in the North End. Hit up the website for more information.

Printing Nicole Small’s Thank You Cards

Creating this blog has opened some doors for me as an artist and creator. As many of you out there know, I am the owner of Boston’s own AntiDesigns. The company started back in 2004 as a graphic t-shirt company and ultimately led to myself and some close friends learning how to screen print. The company can now take on any screen print challenge (read as print challenge, not numbers challenge), and everything I do through AntiDesigns I do as AntiDesigns.

Towards the middle of 2011 I started to do things under my own name, away from the company. There was certainly a lot of confusion for a while, and I don’t think its clear even now where one stops and the other ends.

But this video, taken and created in the dead of winter, January 2012, is all things me. I landed this project over some stiff competition, not knowing it at the time, and started the camera before I even started printing. The video that ended up on youtube has me standing there trying to figure out how the fuck I was going to print these thank you cards. There’s a lot of that in screen printing. You get a job, and you figure it out. Come to think of it, its a lot like programming.

Anyways I love the track selection and enjoy watching myself try to print with the screen facing the wrong way. Luckily I learned, on this job, not to do that. In the end these prints came out really stellar and this video is one of my favorites on the AntiDesigns youtube channel. Enjoy!

Carlos Santana!

The one and only Carlos Santana snagged one of my Miles Davis pieces from the dudes at the Green St Jungle. Kind of surreal. Here’s a pic of him at the store…

Wood Stain screen prints: Process pics

The Friends with Benefits show, held at the Distillery Gallery in South Boston this past May, was a really exciting show for me. I wasn’t sure what I was going to create for the show, but had been making a conscious effort to create everyday for the first half of 2012. I had a lot of sketches and ideas, and started to lean further and further towards doing some portrait style work. I thought about doing some 18×24 prints on paper, similar to the ones I made for the DPI show, but wanted to do something different.

After a random trip to the art store I came across these wood panels that caught my interest. The depth of the box was the same as some prints I had made for a commercial job, and decided I’d go for it. I wanted to create something that somehow brought out the grains of the wood and decided to experiment with wood stain instead of ink. It certainly wasn’t easy, but the end result was great and I’m looking forward to revisiting this process on future work. [Note: The purple color variations are regular acrylic ink]

Printing process of the Grady prints

Sorting through some dusty items in my “toBlog” folder. Came across some photos of printing the Grady print I did for the Design Nearby show last December. I created three variations of the print, as seen in the last couple photos. I wasn’t happy with the print at the time, because the 2nd color inks (red, yellow, purple) were all loosing a lot of opacity once the print dried. But looking at them now I really like the way they came out and enjoyed the experimenting I got to do during the process.

Christmas in July

A lot of the fun and random stuff I’ve worked on / created over the last few years haven’t had a place to shine because my last site was strictly a portfolio of my art and development work. Having a blog now gives me the ability to throw some of that randomness out there.

Here’s something that I made with my better half on my birthday two years ago. Everyone had thrown their Christmas trees out onto the sidewalk for the city to come pick them up… and we thought it’d be better to give them one last little bit of shine. Here’s what resulted:
